Healthy Chocolate Frosting

Healthy Chocolate Frosting

Creamy, Chocolate, and Delicious

Frosting is a very important part of any cake or cupcake. It needs to be super creamy but also not too sweet and overpowering.

May be an unpopular opinion, however, I believe the frosting is always better than the actual cake. With that being said, most store-bought frostings are loaded with sugar and chemicals. That is why I created this healthy homemade chocolate frosting made with all real ingredients.

Don’t get me wrong, I will definitely use the store-bought kind every now and then. However, it is nice to know they are some healthier options if that is what you are looking for. I tried to make this recipe as simple and easy as possible.

This frosting only has ¼ cup of added sugar. Everything is just thrown into the blender so its super quick and easy. This frosting can be used for cakes, muffins, cupcakes, literally anything. I also eat this just on its own, it’s that good.

If you don’t have a blender, a food processor also works. The blender is mainly so the sweet potato is fully blended and there aren’t any chunks. If you don’t have either, you can mash the sweet potato with a fork. Just be sure to mash it very well so the frosting still comes out creamy and not chunky.

You would really never guess how healthy the ingredients are in this. The sweet potato makes the frosting super creamy. If you want your frosting to be sweeter, you can add more maple syrup.

Sweet potato: if you are looking to use something other than sweet potato, you can also use butternut squash. You can also use a Japanese sweet potato.

Cacao powder: cocoa powder also works.

Almond butter: any nut or seed butter works (cashew, peanut, sunflower, etc.) make sure it is super creamy and not chunky.

Maple syrup: any LIQUID sweetener works (agave, date syrup, etc.)

Almond milk: you can use any nondairy milk of choice. Water also works or traditional milk.

 Ingredients:

  • Sweet potato

  • Cacao powder

  • Almond butter

  • Maple syrup

  • Almond milk

Recipe:

  • 3/4 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato

  • ¼ cup maple syrup

  • ¼ cup almond butter

  • 1/3 cup cacao powder

  • ¼ cup almond milk

Directions:

1.     Start by cooking your sweet potatoes.

2.     Once cooked and cooled, mash and add to a blender.

3.     Add in the maple syrup, almond butter, and cacao powder.

4.     Start blending on high.

5.     SLOWLY add in the almond milk you may not need it all.

6.     Continue blending and adding the almond milk until you reached your desired consistency. I only used about 2 tablespoons.

Once done, be sure to store the frosting in the refrigerator. It will last up to 4-5 days.
